A TIME OF MUSIC, A TIME OF MAGIC
by Joseph L. S. Terrell
2004 Reissue Edition by Bella Rosa Books
6" x 9" Trade Paperback, 226 pages

Book Description
A literary novel about one weekend in the life of a dance band musician, a bass player, who has accepted his own self-destruction through alcohol. It takes place in a Southeastern beach town just when the big bands were going out of style.

From the Back Cover
Danny McCullers was one of the people who made the music just when the Big Bands were going out of style. He loved the life that set him and his fellow musicians a bit apart from the rest of the world. His world was on the bandstand with the colored lights going around, the horns hitting it together, the laughing women dressed in beautiful clothes. It was hotel rooms and all-night cafes and long automobile rides over deserted highways, and, always, there had to be the whisky. But at only thirty-one, his world was deteriorating fast, in a haze of alcohol.
At the end of summer, in a small beach town where the band was playing a one-night stand, Danny came to realize that his life might be different—that he still might make it different. He had only to make a choice.

Critic Review
"Terrell's genius is displayed in his characterization, not only of Danny McCullers, but of his helpmates too...A TIME OF MUSIC- is in the category of "I just couldn't put it down."

Author Bio
Joseph Terrell, who now makes his home on the Outer Banks of North Carolina continues writing fiction. While fiction is his first love, Terrell has a publishing history that spans more than forty years and includes—of course—fiction, but also true crime, psychology, agri-business, military and government affairs, trade, plus just about everything in between. He has written for newspapers, magazines, radio and television, advertising and public relations.
A graduate in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, he was awarded a scholarship to the famed University of Iowa Writers Workshop, but the Korean War interrupted his studies. After service as a Special Agent in the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps, Terrell returned to UNC to pursue graduate studies in journalism. He began his journalism career as a staff writer for United Press International, then went on to The Wall Street Journal's Washington bureau covering the Pentagon. Most of his career has been spent in Washington, including a stint as press secretary for the Senate Agriculture Committee; he has also worked for publications in North Carolina and Virginia.
His fiction has been published in The Carolina Quarterly, where an early story won the publication's annual fiction award, in men's magazines, and most recently he has won first place, twice, in the National Press Club's Annual Short Fiction contest.
