THE WILD GARDENER
Author: Peter Loewer

Selected as one of the 75 Great Garden Books
by the American Horticultural Society

Winner of the Garden Writers of America Art of Communication Award

Not so many years ago, the American garden was a refuge from the wild land that surrounded it—a safe place for both man and plant. Now that we are surrounded by civilization—its malls and mown lawns, its playing fields and parking lots—we crave some wild place where Nature can hold court. We want a wild garden.

In The Wild Gardener noted author and artist Peter Loewer explores the native American plants for your wild garden, whether it's a green sanctuary in the midst of a concrete landscape or a naturalized area on the edge of virgin forest.

No folklore or curious historical footnote escapes his notice when it comes to the flora—and resident fauna—-of wild places:
- Why Thoreau drank spring water from a skunk cabbage leaf.
- What wildflowers will perform best in your water garden.
- How the Oconee bells were lost—and found again.
- What carnivorous plants are native to North America.
- How garden spiders fly—and where they go once they become airborne.
- Why only bumblebees can pollinate the pink lady's-slipper orchid.
- How to propagate the delicate maidenhair fern and its relatives.
- Who penned verse about your favorite wildflowers.
- How, in those wonderful whodunits, the gardener did it.

Engaging, erudite, and literate: this is Peter Loewer at his best.
